Why 100% Bamboo?

Eastwind Textiles sell 100% bamboo products

Our creamy towels and sheets have been assessed by CSIRO as 100% bamboo.

Most bamboo products sold in Australia are a mixture of bamboo and cotton. Eastwind Textiles sell 100% bamboo products because:

  • Bamboo is a fast growing grass that can be harvested every three years.
  • Bamboo continually puts up new sprouts so it does not need to be re-planted. To replant cotton you need a tractor burning fossil fuels.
  • Bamboo is naturally anti-bacterial so it doesn’t require pesticides or fertilizers to ward off insects.
  • Organic cotton needs both pesticides and fertilizers. Some experts say 25% of poisons in the world’s rivers comes from growing cotton. Did you know that in 1995, 240,000 fish were killed by water run-off from a cotton plantation in Alabama? The Big Picture: Cotton, the ecological cost
  • For bamboo to thrive in places where it has historically sprung up - like southern China, all you need is natural rainwater
  • Cotton needs heaps of water to grow - it takes 400 gallons (1500 litres) to grow enough cotton to make one t-shirt!
  • Bamboo has thermal properties: warm in winter, cool in summer. This picture from the CSIRO shows bamboo’s round fibre with micro-gaps and micro-holes which give the fabric better moisture absorption so you feel drier and cooler in hot weather, and the fabric doesn’t stick to the skin.
  • Bamboo is so good it is used in a special clotting reduction bandage Stasilon ® is a unique bandage made of a blend of glass and bamboo fibres. It reduces clotting twice as much as cotton gauze.

We want to make sure there’s as little cotton in our products as possible.
